The class will cover the physics and device applications of wide-bandga semiconductors and their heterostructures (primarily III-V Nitrides, and SiC). The topics to be discussed are:Physics of bandstructureOrigin of electronic polarization - spontaneous and piezoelectricCharge scattering and transportOptical properties of bulk and quantum heterostructuresImplications of polarization on band diagrams, transport and optical propertiesWide bandgap devices: Field Effect Transistors, Light Emitting Diodes, and LASERSPolarization-engineering in wide-bandgap electronic and optical devices
