Long Title: Selected Topics on Smart Grid Technologies

Course Description:
This course will cover selected topics relevant to the development of smart electric power grid, which is aimed to provide improved efficiency and security in generating and distributing electric power, as well as enhanced customer empowerment. Some of the key features of smart grid include demand response, distribution automation, bi-directional power flow, and integration of renewable energy sources. The enabling technologies include networked phasor measurement units (PMU), advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) through smart meters, two-way communication through advanced digital communication infrastructure, and visualization techniques. This course will address some of the those technologies from signal processing and communications point of view, with some emphasis on state estimation, M2M communication, demand response and demand-side management, PHEV charging and V2G, etc. It will also provide a brief overview of benefits and challenges of integration of renewable energy sources.
